CHARLES FIELD HAVILAND

In 1852,
David Haviland's 20-year-old nephew, Charles Field Haviland, sailed to France to
begin an apprenticeship in his Uncle David's factory. In 1858, he married Marie
Louise Mallevergne. Her grandfather, Francois Alluaud has established a
whiteware factory in 1797. Within a
year of their marriage Charles found himself a set up as a decorator of
porcelain produced by
the grandfather's business, the
Casseaux Works.
Francois Alluaud's two sons ran the factory until their deaths—both in 1876. Since Charles Field was the sold surviving male in the family and women at that time were not allowed to engage in business, he took over management of the factory.
In 1881, Charles Field retired and the firm of E. Gerard, Dufraissek et Morel took over management with Charles Field retaining a silent partnership and started using the backmark CFH/GDM. Around 1900, Morel left the firm and Frank Abbott, their American distributor in New York City, became a partner and the backmark changed again to CFH/GDA.
Robert Haviland, the grandson of Charles Field, started his own china business in 1924 with his brother-in-law. In 1941, he was able to purchase the Charles Field Haviland backmark from Gerard & Abbott Company. In 1949, he and C. Parlon established the firm of Robert Haviland et C. Parlon
