Haviland China

The Haviland china story began over 150 years ago with
David and Daniel Haviland; two brothers who owned a china
importing business in New York City. When a customer came in
trying to find a replacement for a cup she had broken, David
Haviland became so intrigued that he traveled to the Limoges area
of France to find where it had been manufactured.
His interest subsequently caused him to move his
family to France and establish a china manufacturing company in
that region in 1842. For the next 100 years or more the name
"Haviland" represented the finest in porcelain china. A
member of the Haviland family remained associated with the
Haviland company until 1972, when it was bought by a French
company and underwent restructuring. Since the restructuring, the
Haviland company has continued to produce porcelain of the
highest quality and in many beautiful designs.
Many reference books list the various backmarks used
on Haviland china and help to identify the time period of
manufacture, as well as telling by which branch of the family it
was made .
Because of the great variations and decorations used
on Haviland china, it has been difficult for any single author to
do a comprehensive identification book. Nevertheless, Arlene
Schleiger, in the early 1950's, began the job of cataloguing some
of the Haviland patterns. She wrote five pattern books, with 200
patterns and variations in each book , before her death in April
1983. A 6th book of patterns, and a 7th book of plate shapes
(blanks), gold treatments, and cup shapes, was published by her
son and daughter-in-law in the 1990's.
Several other books have been published on the
subject, including books by Mary Frank Gaston, Gertrude Jacobson,
and others. By some counts there are between 20,000 and 60,000
different patterns depending on the plate shape, pattern design,
color, and gold application. Many books only deal with French
Haviland, but there are hundreds of American Haviland patterns,
as well as Johann Haviland (Bavaria), and even Haviland stoneware
marked "Made in Japan".
