Identifying a Homer Laughlin
Co. china pattern can be a challenge. Most HLC china has the shape name as part
of the backmark and some sort of dating code. Before 1931 the numbers
indicated the year of manufacture. However, in 1931 the system was changed to
indicate the month, the year, and the factory where the piece of china was made.
For instance, "E44N5" would indicate that the piece was made in May (the letter
E being the fifth month) of 1944 at building N5.
This system results in many collectors thinking that these numbers are the the
pattern name. Even when a name such as "Eggshell - Georgian" appears...it only
indicates the shape/style and not the actual design that is on the china. As a
result, some collectors can have the same decal or decoration with varying
dating codes...while others may have a whole set with the same code.
Pattern names come from advertisements, brochures, etc. that were issued when
the china was introduced and/or advertised in magazines. Some pattern names are
found from the research of archive files at the factory and/or various reference
books. Other names may be simply what a collector heard the pattern called. So to
actually identify a HLC pattern, a Xerox or e-mailed picture of the front and
back is necessary so we can know the shape, the approximate age, and the
decoration.
A xerox of the front and back of a plate, or a plate scanned into the computer,
including the backmark is necessary to attempt IDing the pattern.
