Jean Haviland was the son of Charles Edward Haviland and the grandson of David Haviland. In 1907, he changed his name to John, moved to Waldershof, Germany and started his own china business...using the name the "Johann Haviland Company". His products included everyday china, hotel china, and high quality china for home use. However, by 1924, this company was no longer in business and the Italian manufacturing company of Richard-Ginori purchased the rights to the Johann Haviland name. Under their control, they changed the name to "Porzellanfabrik Waldershof AG", and continued making china until 1933. In 1937 the German porcelain manufacturer, Rosenthal, bought the Waldershlof factory and began to produce fine china for export to the United States, using the backmark "Johann Haviland, Bavaria, Germany", and continued to use that backmark until the late 1980s. During the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, most of the patterns of Johann Haviland that we see today, were sold in grocery stores, and/or given as premiums. They were distributed by the Johann Haviland Corporation of Des Plaines, Illinois. "Blue Garland" is probably the best know pattern that was made by the Johann Haviland Company and, even today, it is still being made. However, the backmark now reads, "Tradition Fine China Made for Johann Haviland China Company", and though it is made in Thailand, it still is a very good match with the original Bavarian product.
The following names and numbers were arbitrarily assigned by us when we did not know a pattern name. If your pattern is not included, please send a close up colored picture or Xerox, along with any history you might know, and we will add it to this collection. Our hope is to eventually gather enough patterns to compile a book.
